Mondolfo e il lungomare di Marotta. “Il mare unisce le terre che divide”
Do you think it’s possible to enjoy two different vacations at the same time during one stay? The answer is yes! Here’s an example: a part of the Adriatic Sea, on the Marche coast, belongs to Marotta, a well-known seaside resort within the municipality of Mondolfo, an attractive center in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, and one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.
This excellent hillside location extends to the Marotta beach, a Blue Flag beach for its water quality, offering guests an exclusive vacation with a dual soul, both rural and maritime, where two different cultures meet and influence the local cuisine.
Spend the morning at the sea, enjoying the beach, swimming, and walking along the shore, followed by lunch and perhaps a nap. In the afternoon, you can head to the cooler air on the hill where Mondolfo is located, with its highly appreciated historic center dominated by the imposing Castle that houses the Town Hall, a true Fortress on the Adriatic signed by one of the most prestigious architects of the time, Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501). From here, streets and small squares unfold, enclosed within a perfectly preserved double order of walls.
A leisurely and healthy walk is recommended, breathing in history and pleasing the eyes with the harmonious blend of Renaissance and Baroque: Palazzo Peruzzi, the early Christian Abbey of San Gervasio, the Town Hall with its Civic Tower, the Bastion of Sant’Anna, the Collegiate Church of Santa Giustina, the monumental complex of Sant’Agostino, and the Civic Museum. Among the curiosities is the Ball Game with a Bracelet, a local tradition passed down since the Renaissance.
For the 2024 edition, the prestigious and highly followed literary event “Come un libro all’aperto” will host top-tier writers in the Italian cultural scene, thanks to the collaboration of Honorary President Marino Bartoletti.
The first date is Tuesday, June 18 at 9:15 PM, with Walter Veltroni presenting his latest book, “La condanna” (Rizzoli), at the Cloister of Sant’Agostino in Mondolfo, which will host various writers and artists in the following days. A few examples: Wednesday, June 19 at 9:15 PM, will feature Marino Bartoletti himself with his latest literary success, “La partita degli dei” (Gallucci); Thursday, August 1 at 9:15 PM, Marcello Veneziani will present “L’amore necessario. La forza che muove il mondo” (Marsilio). Tuesday, July 2 at 9:15 PM in Piazza dell’Unificazione in Marotta, which inspired his famous song ‘Il mare d’inverno’, singer-songwriter and honorary citizen Enrico Ruggeri will present his latest book “40 VITE (senza fermarmi mai) (La nave di Teseo)”.
Highlighting the uniqueness of Marotta’s Promenade: more than eight hundred thousand fragments, connected one to another, shine on the walls of the Lungomare dei Mosaici, a multicolored walk created over the years by the volunteers of the “Mosaichiamo la Città” project, along with international artists and many local organizations! A true open-air work of art that makes the coastline unique.
In Marotta, the 4th edition of the ’80s Festival, Marottanta, will feature film screenings, ’80s games, and major concerts from July 31 to August 4. Among the guests is RAF’s concert on Saturday, August 3 at the Molo Arena.
Since the 19th century, Mondolfo has been known for its production of accordions. The quality of the musical instruments made here has reached such levels that they are known worldwide, and this year, from August 19 to 25, the second edition of “Tramantici”, the Mondolfo Accordion Festival, will promote and enhance the memory of an instrument that has characterized this territory for a century with valuable productions. During that same week, Mondolfo, together with Pesaro, will be the Italian Capital of Culture 2024.
Throughout the summer months, Mondolfo offers numerous events: literary, musical, and gastronomic festivals where rural and maritime traditions meet. On several occasions, there will be stands with typical Marotta dishes, famous throughout Italy: garagoi (mollusks), seasonal legumes, sardoncini scottadito, fried fish, roasted fish, pasta with fish sauces, and brodetto alla marottese.
Guests greatly appreciate the historical re-enactment of fishing with the “tratta,” traditional dragnet fishing. The fishing at dawn, on Sunday morning around six, is particularly evocative when fishermen revive the moments of fishing at sunrise.
In short, as the mayor of this attractive village, Nicola Barbieri, says, “Mondolfo and Marotta, with their cultural, musical, and food and wine events and their various festivals not to be missed, are certainly two destinations for all seasons. We look forward to seeing you!”
