Montecassiano: the village of buskers with a medieval onion-shaped structure
Many famous personalities began their careers performing as “Buskers,” including Lucio Dalla, Sting, Jon Bon Jovi, and many others. In our country, street artists have become a charming presence in numerous locations. Among these is Montecassiano (MC), which hosts the Street Music and Art Festival: “Svicolando,” promoting art in all its forms (this year’s edition takes place on June 14/15/16).
National and international artists perform high-level, unique, and thrilling shows, always attracting thousands of tourists.
A MOSAIC OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS
A mosaic of houses centers around a square with a thousand shades of color, created by the light illuminating the countless bricks covering the buildings in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the stairways, and the homes. Geometries and interweavings make Montecassiano (MC) one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and an orange flag of the Italian Touring Club.
The historic center is enclosed by a city wall, and the village is accessed through three entrance gates. Palazzo dei Priori, beautiful both in structure and in its elegant and refined battlements, overlooks the welcoming main square.
A touch of romance in the biforas visible on the facade, guiding the observer to the loggia below. An appreciated example of civil Gothic architecture in the Marche region.
The construction of the nearby bell tower also began in the 15th century. A masterpiece of the Collegiate Church, with great emotional impact, is the monumental glazed and painted terracotta altarpiece, created by the Florentine Fra’ Mattia della Robbia (initially assisted by his brother Ambrogio, who then passed away).
It is important not only for its grand and unusual dimensions but also because it is the only confirmed work (documented through archival papers) of one of the last members of the famous Florentine Della Robbia workshop, renowned in the 15th and 16th centuries for its production of majolica and terracotta. The central panel depicts the Madonna with Child in glory among Saint Sebastian, Saint Roch, Saint Peter Martyr, and Saint Anthony Abbot.
Visit the Girolamo Buratto Civic Art Gallery inside Palazzo Compagnucci, then enjoy moments of relaxation in the courtyards of San Giacomo and the Clarisses, and don’t miss the cloister of the Augustinians.
The town has more than 70 associations, thus also known as the “town of Associations.”
FROM THE SIBILLINI MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA
Montecassiano offers wonderful panoramas that stretch from the Sibillini Mountains to the sea. From Cerreto Park, you can enjoy a unique view that will take your breath away. The park hosts the event “Vivi Cerreto” on July 5/6/7, featuring music, children’s events, and gastronomy. There is also an attractive equipped green path, a herbarium, and a picnic area.
THE PALIO DEI TERZIERI
Another highly anticipated event in July is the “Palio dei Terzieri,” during which a magical medieval atmosphere can be felt. Knights and ladies parade in period costumes, and the scents of excellent local and traditional dishes from the taverns invite tasting. Late July is dedicated to theater and other interesting initiatives.
A walk through the center is certainly an activity not to be missed; its circular structure following the hill’s contours has been described as “onion-shaped.”
THE SUGHITTI
An excellence of the village, awarded the UNPLI Quality Festival mark, takes place in October during the grape harvest, dedicated to the “Sughitti,” a dessert with a unique preparation, made with cornmeal, grape must, and walnuts.
A journey with every step and in every unique corner of the village, where art, beauty, and authentic flavors blend into a single exclusive combination.
