The historical connection between Compiano and the Principality of Monaco
Would any of you have ever imagined that the small state of Monaco, overlooking the French Riviera, owes its title of Principality to Compiano, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, an enchanting center in the province of Parma?
History tells us that Prince Federico II of the Landi Family, owner, among other things, of the magnificent Compiano Castle once belonging to the Malaspina family, in 1595, realized that the marriage between his sister Maria and Ercole Grimaldi, Lord of Monaco, would bring advantages to both families.
And it is exactly from this moment that the history of the Landi family and that of the Grimaldi family become indissolubly intertwined. Ercole Grimaldi and all his descendants acquire the title of Princes!
Alberto II, Prince of Monaco, paid an official visit to Compiano, in the majestic Castle that guards its ancient origins, and unveiled the plaque dedicated to this little-known piece of history (see photo).
The traditions of Compiano are very ancient. In fact, from the mid-18th century, men traveled throughout Europe earning a living with music accompanied by trained animals. Over time, this gave rise to the famous “Festival of Street Artists.”
Another excellence is the Millennial Fair of San Terenziano. Compiano offers guests the opportunity to venture into inviting trails, ride racing or mountain bikes, go on exciting hikes or horseback rides, or take a fascinating and electrifying tour among the castles of the Duchy and, on some, even by hot air balloon.
For your upcoming travels, in addition to discovering the attractive territory, delight your palates with traditional dishes, such as the exquisite Fillet of Valtaro Trout with Porcini Mushroom from Borgotaro IGP.
